Dalian Rongke VRFB Energy Storage Obtained ANSI/CAN/UL 1973 Certification

Recently, the Chinese team of CSA Group has completed the safety standard assessment of ANSI/CAN/UL 1973 for VRFB-ReFlex series of Dalian Rongke Energy Storage Technology Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Dalian Rongke”), and awarded the CSA certification for this series of products. As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of new energy and energy storage batteries, Dalian Rongke has been authorized by CSA Group, which indicates that products of VRFB-ReFlex series meet the highest international safety standards.

Project background

VRFB is a kind of redox battery with vanadium as active material and circulating liquid. ReFlex series of all-vanadium fluid Battery energy storage products, which have been authorized by CSA Group, are jointly developed by Dalian Rongke Company and UniEnergy Technologies of the United States. They jointly hold the authentication certificate. The single battery module is 10kW/40kWh. It is mainly composed of the electric reactor, electrolyte, battery control system, electrolyte circulation pump, storage tank and pipeline system, etc. It has the characteristics of high integration, good reliability, easy movement and flexible combination. It can be widely used in industrial and commercial distributed energy storage and intelligent micro grid, playing the function of improving power quality and stabilizing power supply. It can be used as emergency power supply in emergency. It can also be used as the standard unit of megawatt-level energy storage system to build large-scale energy storage power stations, supporting renewable energy generation stations, providing auxiliary services such as peak regulation, load balancing and power quality improvement for the power system. NFPA855 (version 2020) for installation of  stationary energy storage system was issued and entered into force on August 25, 2019. Mr. Zekarias Bekele, Technical Manager, Electrical Engineering, CSA Group, participated in the standard development as a member of the Technical Committee on the code. The standard (NFPA855) provides for the entire life cycle of design, construction, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of stationary energy storage systems installed in the United States. NFPA855 clearly points out that stationary energy storage system must meet the safety test method for evaluating thermal uncontrolled flame propagation in battery energy storage system UL9540A- and obtain the safety requirements of UL9540-energy storage system and equipment. CSA Group in China strengthens localization service to help enterprises expand international market.

CSA Group established a new energy laboratory in Kunshan, Jiangsu province in 2012, and now has a very mature and experienced local battery energy storage team. The local team can assist the enterprise to familiarize with the standard requirements, make use of the rich experience and professional understanding of the standard of CSA group expert team, and help the enterprise to identify problems, solve problems, improve the safety design of the product and comply with the safety regulations of the installation destination.
