Protean Energy appoints technical advisor for development of vanadium battery project

Dr Soowhan Kim has more than 20 years’ experience in developing next generation energy conversion and storage technologies.
Protean Energy Ltd’s (ASX:POW) 60%-owned subsidiary KORID Energy has appointed Dr Soowhan Kim as a technical advisor to assist in the development of the company’s vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) project.
Kim is a leading authority on emerging energy storage systems with over 20 years’ experience working for large research associations and energy corporations.
He will also act as the administrator of the project’s grant from the Korean Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP).
Protean chairman Bevan Tarratt said: “We are extremely pleased to have Dr. Kim involved in the development of the KETEP trial battery project.
“This appointment grants the company access to over 20 years of experience in leading industry and research bodies.
“The combination of Korean government support and a world-class technical team provides significant value accretion to Protean’s Korean operations.”
Based out of Sunkyunkwan University in South Korea, Kim is acting as an industry collaboration professor.
He has been involved in fuel cell development in senior research positions for Hyundai Motor Company since 1998 and is the recipient of numerous awards from the company for outstanding achievements within the battery development sector.
Kim also acted as senior research scientist for Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL) and lead the team involved with the development of redox flow battery system development.
