Southeast Asian rebar makers urged to adopt stricter standards, follow China’s lead

Safety concerns and China’s recent tightening of rebar production standards should compel Southeast Asian steelmakers to start phasing out lower-strength and poor-quality rebar, delegates heard at a conference in Vietnam on Monday November 26.
China implemented its revised national rebar standard GB-T 1499.2-2018 at the start of November. Steel mills will need to raise the content of alloying elements such as vanadium or niobium in their rebar to comply with the higher yield and strength requirements. “China’s move will hasten other regional players to address shortfalls in their rebar quality and design codes, hopefully before any major natural disaster occurs,” Jitendra Patel, senior technical consultant at CBMM Technology Suisse SA,.
