Substation Breaker Failure Plunges Large Parts Of North Coast Into Darkness

A breakdown of two 132kv breakers at Eskom’s Avon substation in Shakaskraal has cast much of the North Coast into darkness.
“At around 4.30pm technicians discovered that both incoming lines had failed,” said Ward 22 councillor, Privi Makhan.
The power outage has affected sections of Ballito, Palm Lakes, Tinley Manor, the Umhlali Country Club and surrounds, Imbonini and Simbithi.
PR councillor Nel Sewraj confirmed KwaDukuza north, including Newtown, Townview, Blythedale, Groutville and Ntshawini have also being plunged into darkness.
Problems arose on the Eskom supply side of the power grid and technicians had to be dispatched from Empangeni, he said.
“The technicians had already left Empangeni by 7.30pm. The latest estimate is that power will be back on by 11pm, per Mr Mpanza from Eskom,” Sewraj said.
